If you're new to this field and you just get started. Well, today I'm sharing the 6 skills that you need to learn or better to run a successful website. Here I classify a business website in basic 3 category

  • Online store/ e-commerce site

  • Blog or Publisher site

  • Online Educational site

These are the type of websites that need to be regularly updated in the sense of content and enhanced their performance. And to do so it require some skills and knowledge. Here I explained how these skills impact your website's performance and where can you learn more about them free!

1. SEO(Search Engine Optimisation):


SEO is a technique through which you can rank your website on Google and get organic traffic. When a user searches for any query then Google runs its algorithms to provide the best and relative results. Google defines sets of rules for the website's owner to rank on known as the "ranking factors".


While creating content to rank higher on Google, you need to take care of these ranking factors! SEO is a large topic and can learn only by continuous practicing.

2. Google Analytics


Google Analytics is a free tool that helps you to track your goals and analyze your audience's behavior. It provides so much detailed information that helps you to set your new targets and shows the lagging parts that you want to improve.


Here I shortly describe which kind of reports and data you'll get from Google Analytics. Google Analytics provides mainly 5 types of reports. It also provides various filters, matrix, and dimensions to gives you the in-depth information you want.


Real-time report:

It gives you real-time activity data on your website. Like how many users are currently viewing your site, source, and locations of traffic, events, conversations and etc.


Audience Report:

As the name suggests this report gives you the in-depth detail of your audience like where are they from, how long they stay on your site, their interests, which devices and browsers they use, returning visitors and new visitors, etc.


Acquisition Report:

This report shows the source of traffics and its behavior.


Behavior Report:

This report shows the behavior of your site like site speed, site content, events, etc.


Conversions Report:

In Google Analytics you can create goals and track them. These goals depend on types of websites like e-commerce or blog. If your website is an e-commerce site then your goal could be to track 'How many website visitors purchase the item'.


And if your site is a blog/publisher who earns revenue from showing ads. Then your goal could be to track the average depth of the article that your visitors read. Conversions report shows the behavior and tracking data of your goal conversions.

3. Google Search Console:

Google Search Console helps you to improve the performance of your site on Google Search. It shows your site's CTR, average position, Impression, etc. This is the place where you need to submit your website's sitemap or individual URLs for crawling.


Performance Report:

Analyze Report's data and Optimize your content

It shows which keyword and article have more clicks and impressions so you can batter them to rank higher on search results. You'll also get ideas of the next content based on the impression of your current content.


URL inspection:

You can your site's URL here. It shows you whether the URL is crawled and indexed or not. If it is not indexed then you can request indexing.


Coverage Report:

In the index section, you can select the coverage report you can find is there any issues with your pages or not. It shows you the error page, Indexed with the warning, valid and excluded. To


Error: These are pages that couldn't be indexed due to some reason. If there are pages with errors then it won't appear on search results and it leads to loose of your traffic.


Valid with the warning: These are indexed pages with some issues. And Google couldn't identify that on your part these are intentional or not.


Valid: These pages are successfully indexed.


Excluded: Excluded pages are the pages that are intentionally not indexed.

4. Content creating:

User engagement is an important part of a site's success. To engage your audiences you need to provide them useful and quality content. Content could be a blog post, video tutorial, podcast, posters, infographics, etc.


You need to create content according to the current trends and needs. You can use your analytics data and Google trends to know the interest of the audience in your niche.


While creating content keep in mind that "people also have their likes and dislikes". Some people like to read lengthy posts and some just want it in an easy infographic image. Some like to listen to the podcast and some like to watch the video. So you need to find out what works best for your audience and create the content accordingly.


It is more useful to create an infographic image of an informative article. This will increases the chances of sharing your infographic in social media. Or you can create a podcast of your articles. Here are some good examples of sites that contains blog posts and podcast.

6. Scheduling/ Time management:

Last but not least, time management skill is a skill required in each profession. Scheduling is linked with the content. To reach the destination you need a roadmap. Likewise, to achieve your goals and target you need to take the right steps.


In the online business, it's very important to schedule future posts for upcoming events. Scheduling is associated with the content. It's like creating content for the next few weeks or months and schedule them. It helps you to pop up your content in front of your audience at the right time. Digital marketers and social media creators prepare a content calendar for tuning with future events.

Apart from Google analytics and webmaster tools, there are lots of tools you might need to use. But in the beginning, these tools (Google analytics and Webmaster) help you to observe the audience's behavior and website performance.
